Advice

Ideas and concepts for the projects of tomorrow

Even in the early project phases, we support you in evaluating technical possibilities, developing economical solutions and making the right decisions regarding design, material and execution.

Our goal is to work with you to develop a viable, technically sound and sustainable solution.

Design and form finding

Rendering model - central bus station Mönchengladbach - ETFE-PTFE

The shape of a membrane does not arise freely, but is the result of a physical equilibrium between prestress and external influences.

We develop the geometry of the membrane using:

  • numerical form-finding processes

  • Consideration of material properties (e.g., stiffness, creep behavior)

  • Definition of suitable preload conditions

This ensures that:

  • the membrane is stable in space

  • No impermissible wrinkling should occur.

  • Loads are transferred in a targeted and controlled manner.

In parallel, we take into account the architectural requirements and develop a form that is functionally necessary and aesthetically convincing.

Right at the beginning of a project, we clarify whether and how a membrane structure is feasible under the given conditions.

In this context, we will consider in particular:

  • Geometric boundary conditions (spans, support points, height development)

  • Load assumptions (wind, snow, temperature, usage)

  • Integration into existing load-bearing structures or new buildings

  • Building law requirements and permit eligibility

A key component is the analysis of the interaction between:

  • membrane

  • Supporting structure

  • substructure

  • Building site and foundations

Based on this, we develop initial solutions and evaluate various options with regard to:

  • technical feasibility

  • constructive effort

  • economic implementation

Material selection

The choice of suitable membrane material has a decisive influence on:

  • Load-bearing behavior

  • life

  • Maintenance costs

  • optical appearance

We will advise you specifically on your choice between:

  • PVC-coated fabrics (economical, flexible in use)

  • PTFE-coated fiberglass fabrics (high durability, low susceptibility to soiling)

  • ETFE films (translucent, low weight, high light transmission)

In the consultation process, we take the following into account:

  • mechanical properties (strength, elongation, relaxation)

  • Aging behavior and weather resistance

  • Fire behavior and approvals

  • Cleaning and maintenance requirements

  • ecological aspects such as recyclability and life cycle

The goal is to select materials that are ideally suited to the project, its use, and the budget.

Maintenance and service

Membrane structures are permanent structures whose function and appearance must be ensured through regular maintenance.

We define the following as early as the planning phase:

  • accessible maintenance areas and inspection options

  • Constructive details to prevent soiling or water accumulation

  • durable and easily replaceable connection points

Based on this, we will advise you on:

  • Cleaning intervals and procedures

  • Inspection cycles

  • Measures for early damage detection

This ensures that the structure can be operated functionally, safely and economically throughout its entire lifespan.

Interface coordination

Membrane structures are always in direct connection with other trades.

We are specifically examining the interfaces to:

  • Steel or solid construction

  • Facade and roof systems

  • technical equipment (e.g. drainage, lighting)

In this context, we define:

  • Load transfers

  • Tolerances

  • Assembly processes

The goal is a clean and conflict-free integration into the overall structure.
